  AGENCY HIGHLIGHTS

Washington State is a national leader in placing women in the construction industry, and this is largely due to the work of Apprenticeship & Nontraditional Employment for Women and Men (ANEW) operates one of the most successful pre-apprenticeship training programs in the country through a comprehensive, 11 week, full-time training program.

This program is currently offered at South Seattle Community College ’s Duwamish Industrial Training Center .  ANEW provides assistance to pre-apprenticeship training programs throughout the United States and Canada .

Established in 1980, ANEW is the longest continually operating pre-apprenticeship training program in the United States and has successfully trained over 2500 people in the past 26 years.

SUPPORTING LIVABLE WAGE JOBS AND CAREER PROGRESSION

Historically 71% of ANEW’s pre-apprenticeship program clients complete the training  program and 65% of the students enrolled find jobs at an average entry level wage of $14.95 per hour. 

Graduates obtain living wage entry-level jobs that also offer excellent skills, benefits, and the opportunity for wage and career progression.  A journey level construction worker can earn approximately $30.00 per hour plus a benefits package at the end of an apprenticeship program.

MEETING WASHINGTON STATES EXPANDING WORKFORCE NEEDS

ANEW has broad support from both union and non-union interest.  Skilled trade jobs are at their highest level of demand ever.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than one million jobs will be available in construction by 2012.  The Washington State Office of the Forecast Council reported in September 2005 that Construction employment led all private non-manufacturing sector expansion by 9.2%.

  • Recognized in 1997 by U.S. Department of Labor among the top 20 Welfare-to-Work Training Programs of the Year
  • Recipient of a Distinguished Performance Award from the National Alliance of Business
  • Intensive Core Services:  Recruitment, Case Management, Support Services, Job Placement and Retention
  • Partner with local Workforce Development Councils in King County , and Snohomish County to provide apprenticeship preparation training and support services to individuals desiring to enter a construction trades apprenticeship program.
